TCRM ESTABLISHES A BEST STUDENT/EARLY CAREER PRESENTATION
AWARD
TCRM is pleased to announce it is establishing an award for the best graduate student/new
professional presentation. Eligible candidates will be students and new professionals within
5 years of receiving their PhDs who are first authors of TCRM presentations. A panel that
includes TCRM’s Past-Chair will jury the papers.
KUDOS TO HILARY ROSE
Thanks to Hilary Rose who adroitly chaired TCRM 2008 in Little Rock, setting up the program,
manning the registration desk, and doing all the behind the scenes tasks that are so necessary.
The 2008 workshop went off without a hitch, with excellent sessions focusing on theory and
methods and a well-attended plenary cum reception sponsored by the Journal of Family Issues.
Roger Lancaster, an expert on sex and gender and author of The Trouble with Nature: Sex in
Science and Popular Culture, was the keynote speaker. Thanks, Hilary, for all your hard work!
NCFR’s staff, especially Conference Consultant Cindy Winters, also get thanks for the support
they provide to TCRM.
POSSIBLE TCRM BYLAWS AND CHANGE FROM WORKSHOP REGISTRATION TO
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE
TCRM has functioned informally as an ad hoc, preconference workshop. With the success
the group has enjoyed for more than 35 years, we need to ask: Is it time to be a bit more
formal? Dave Klein and Kay Pasley are suggesting we have TCRM bylaws. They are
working to draft a set. Dave writes:
One of the things on my mind is that we might want to change TCRM from being
registration-based to being membership-based. This would require deliberation of the pros
and cons by the relevant constituency. It made sense for TCRM to be registration-based
before we converted entirely to electronic communications. Now, with minimal costs for
making papers available, having annual membership dues may make more sense than a
registration fee. This might mean that members who aren't present at the business meeting
could vote on certain matters, but allowing this may be controversial.
Please let Dave know your thoughts, dmklein@mac.com.
TCRM PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP 2009
Phil Shaver Invited Plenary Speaker
Phil Shaver’s 1987 article “Romantic love conceptualized as an attachment process” is a
classic that brought a rich, new perspective to understanding adult intimate relationships.
Combining attachment theory with contemporary methods from cognitive and socialcognitive psychology, Phil is one of the most prolific, theoretically exciting and influential
close relationship scholars of our times. He is Distinguished Professor and Chair of
Psychology at the University of California at Davis and recipient of the International
Association of Relationship Research’s Distinguished Career Award (see his home page,
http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/faculty/Shaver/). In 2004 he was invited to address the Dalai
Lama in Dharamsala, India. We look forward to his reflections on attachment in close
relationships at the workshop in San Francisco.
Thanks to the sponsorship of the Journal of Family Issues (Constance Shehan, Editor), there
will be a reception in conjunction with Phil’s presentation.
Alan Acock and Isaac Washburn, Methods Training Workshop
Alan Acock and Isaac Washburn have offered to do a TCRM methods training workshop
providing an introduction to analyzing panel and multilevel data using Stata. Alan writes
“This is a really great way to do this sort of analysis.” No background in Stata is required.
How to Submit
If you wish to get involved in the TCRM workshop and we hope you do, the call for
presentations is available on the TCRM web page at http://www.ncfr.org/conf/TCRM.asp. For
symposia and papers (including a new category of theory-review papers), you will be asked to
submit a cover sheet and a proposal abstract as an email attachment. Please contact Dan
Perlman, TCRM 2009 Chair, at d_perlma@uncg.edu or 336 256-0134 for more information.
Hurry! The proposal deadline is Monday, March 16.
Call for Reviewers, Discussants and Presiders
Please let Dan Perlman know if you are interested in being a TCRM 2009 reviewer, presider or
discussant. Reviewers will be contacted in late March and asked to return reviews in two-weeks.
Typically reviewers will be asked to review 1-2 proposals. All TCRM sessions begin by being
called to order by the presider who keeps things on track. Each discussant will speak for 10
minutes, and each author will respond for 10 minutes. Open discussion with the audience will
follow. Please contact Dan ASAP if you are willing to be a reviewer and by Friday, April 17,
2009 to indicate your interest in being either a discussant or a presider, as well as your area of
expertise. Students and new professionals are encouraged to volunteer to be presiders and
discussants. You can reach Dan Perlman, TCRM 2009 Chair, at d_perlma@uncg.edu, or 336 256
0134.

TCRM Newsletter, February 2008
by Hilary Rose, TCRM 2008 Chair
Mission of Theory Construction and Research Methodology (TCRM) Workshop
TCRM’s mission is to facilitate the creation and refinement of theory and methods
relative to the study of families. The TCRM workshop strives to create an environment of
discovery, intellectual challenge, and debate for authors and colleagues who are developing new
approaches to theory, methods, and practice. Scholars who have works in progress present at
TCRM to benefit from the collective wisdom and critique of informed colleagues.
TCRM sessions comprise informed discussions of theoretical and methodological issues
raised by peer-reviewed papers that are read prior to the workshop by discussants and workshop
attendees. The format of TCRM is unique in that registrants access copies of all papers about a
month before the conference. Because attendees have already read the papers, discussions can
center on the ideas raised in each paper, and on the integration of different papers in a given
session.
As discussants have also provided their comments to the papers' authors in advance,
authors get a chance to respond to the discussants' comments in an atmosphere of collaboration,
pushing forward the thinking of authors, discussants, and audience alike. As a result, family
methods and theories can evolve in a collegial and cooperative context--one that is especially
welcoming of students and new professionals in the field.
Kudos to Kay!
Thanks to Kay Pasley who chaired TCRM 2007 in Pittsburgh spite of a serious back
injury last fall. The 2007 workshop seemingly went off without a hitch, with excellent sessions
focusing on theory and methods and a well-attended plenary on the past and future of theory.
Kay also deserves thanks, along with Cindy Winter, for getting TCRM's on-line proposal
submission format up and running for 2007. There were some minor glitches with the new online system, but those should be resolved in time for TCRM 2008. Thanks, Kay, for all your
hard work!
TCRM 2008
TCRM 2008 will take place at the Peabody Hotel (home of the famous Peabody Ducks)
in Little Rock's downtown River Market District. The workshop will take place November 4th5th, immediately preceding NCFR's annual conference, November 5th-8th. Depending on the
number of sessions (to be determined), approximately 3/5s of the sessions will be held on
Tuesday, November 4th, with the remainder held on Wednesday, November 5th. TCRM will
also include an opening plenary session, as well as the business meeting (usually held during the
NCFR conference).
How to Submit... The Deadline (March 1, 2008) Approaches!
In order to submit a proposal to TCRM, you will have to use NCFR's on-line submission
format (via the NCFR website), including registering with the system and logging in (follow the
prompts). Types of paper sessions at the workshop will include:
(a) working papers--papers submitted individually, in order to benefit from discussion of
theoretical or methodological issues with discussants and the audience;
(b) symposia--submitted as a thematic group of 2 or 3 papers, or grouped by the TCRM chair.
The papers will be related and discussion will focus on the concepts that link the papers together;
(c) invited plenary sessions--with a broad, open format, focussing on specific theoretical or
methodological issues that will benefit from discussion, and will be of interest to all TCRM
attendees.
You will be asked for the full title of your proposal ("abstract"), as well as for a short
abstract in Word (maximum 100 words) for publicity purposes. You will also be asked to
provide a long abstract in Word (maximum 8 pages) for peer review. Your long abstract should
include a) a brief background and context for your proposed session, including the importance of
your proposed work and how it will advance either family theory or methodology (maximum
half a page); b) the objectives and rationale (maximum half a page); and c) details of your
proposed work, including literature and other evidence to support it (maximum 7 pages,
including references and figures). Please use 12-point font. If you are submitting a proposal for
a paper, do not include any names of authors on either the short or long abstracts.
If you and your colleagues are submitting a proposal for a symposium, the process is
somewhat different. Each author (or set of authors) to be included in the symposium writes a 1page summary of their proposed work. These are sent directly to the symposium chair who will
compile them into a single Word file for on-line submission. The symposium chair will then
write a summary that synthesizes and links the included 1-page summaries. The symposium
chair will also include all authors' names, employers, and e-mail addresses on the proposal itself
(maximum 8 pages). This proposal, submitted by the symposium chair, constitutes the long
abstract as discussed in the above paragraph, and it will be peer reviewed. In addition, the
symposium chair will submit the full title of the proposed symposium and the short abstract for
publicity purposes.
Once you are logged in, submitting proposals for TCRM is a seven-step process. Step 1
involves submitting the title, the short abstract, and the long abstract; Step 2 involves giving the
name and affiliation for the first author or symposium chair; Step 3 involves giving names and
affiliations for any other authors; Step 4 involves stating whether the focus is on theory or
methodology, making suggestions for possible discussants, and declaring possible conflicts of
interest; Step 5 involves choosing a preferred presentation format (paper or symposium), and
requesting audiovisual equipment; Step 6 involves providing personal information such as
primary discipline, student or new professional status, or visa requirements if any; Step 7
involves agreeing to allow the abstract to be published on the website, and agreeing to register
for the workshop if a proposal is accepted.
Calling All Reviewers
At the TCRM 2007 Business Meeting in Pittsburgh, at least 15 TCRM attendees pledged
to act as reviewers for proposals for TCRM 2008. As the deadline for proposals approaches
(March 1, 2008), I want to remind reviewers of their commitment to review proposals for TCRM
2008. By mid-March, I will be contacting reviewers to review no more than seven proposals
each (based on last year's submission number). Reviewers will have a two-week turn-around
time to complete their reviews on-line. Questions? Please contact me, Hilary Rose, TCRM 2008
Chair, at hrose@alcor.concordia.ca
Volunteer to be a TCRM Discussant or Presider
Please let me know if you are interested in being either a presider or a discussant at
TCRM 2008 in Little Rock, AR. All TCRM sessions begin by being called to order by the
presider who keeps things on track. Each discussant will speak for 10 minutes, and each author
will respond for 10 minutes. Open discussion with the audience will follow. Please contact me
by April 10, 2008 to indicate your interest in being either a discussant or a presider, as well as
your area of expertise. Students and new professionals are encouraged to volunteer to be
presiders and discussants. You can reach me Hilary Rose, TCRM 2008 Chair, at
hrose@alcor.concordia.ca

Margaret Crosbie-Burnett and approved
4. Chair Hilary Rose reviewed the 2008 TCRM Program indicating:
a.
There were 19 proposals, of which 15 were accepted and 13 eventually presented
b.
There were some problems with online submission: 5 proposals were intended as
NCFR submissions and some who registered for TCRM did not receive their
password
c.
Hilary thanked the 2008 reviewers including Katherine Allen, Chalandra Bryant,
Jane Gilgun, Joe Grzywacz, David Klein, Stan Knapp, Jan Melby, Dan Perlman,
Walter Schumm, Brad van Eeden-Moorefield, and Jim White
d.
There were six sessions plus the plenary address by Roger Lancaster on Tuesday
and seven sessions on Wednesday. The Journal of Family Issues sponsored the
plenary address and food was served. An estimated 45 people attended the
plenary session
e.
TCRM co-sponsored Margarete Sandelowski’s session on successfully writing
qualitative grant proposals; cost app. $400
f.
A total of 119 individuals registered for TCRM, 109 in advance and 10 on-site.
Copies of the papers (15 sets) were available at the conference for $20 each
(printing costs: $12 each).
g.
The time for discussants to present was set at 15 minutes and the time between
sessions was set at 15 minutes. Reactions to these decisions were positive. So,
sessions consisted of 5 minutes for the presider’s introductory remarks, 15
minutes for each discussant (n = 2), 10 minutes for each presenter’s rejoinders (n
= 2), and roughly 35 minutes for discussion.
Hilary recommended requesting in acceptance letters that participants register early so that all
have access to the online materials.
5. Secretary-Treasurer Report
The Treasurer provider her report, indicating a small increase in funds of $42. As 2009-2010 will
be Sylvia’s last year, a new Secretary-Treasurer should be elected at the 2009 meeting.
6. Digitizing TCRM materials
Kay Pasley and Dave Klein reported on the progress being made in digitizing and putting online
materials from earlier TCRM Workshops. Materials from 1971 to 1999 have been digitized.
Work continues to digitize materials from 2000-2008. Beyond digitizing materials per se, Kay
and Dave would ideally like to have a Table of Contents plus searchable author and keyword
indexes. It is intended that access to TCRM materials will initially be password protected.
7. Comments from Bob Milardo, Editor of the Journal of Family Theory & Review
Bob Milardo, Editor of the Journal of Family Theory & Review, spoke. He indicated the first
issue containing 3 article and 4 book reviews had been submitted to the publisher. Bob welcomes
discussions with potential Guest Editors in doing special issues. He is seeking articles from
multiple disciplines. The audience enthusiastically thanked Bob for his work.
8. Election of officers
An election of officers was conducted with the following results:
Katherine Allen to be chair in 2009-10 for the 2010 preconference
Kevin Roy to be chair in 2010-11 for the 2011 preconference

9. Award for Best Graduate Student Paper:
Moved by Kay Pasley, seconded by Margaret Crosbie-Burnett and approved
Motion: TCRM should institute an award for the best graduate student/new professional
presentation. The award will include a modest honorarium (e.g., $250 to be decided by TCRM’s
Chair).
Candidates eligible will be student and new professional within 5 years of receiving their PhDs
who are first authors of TCRM presentations. The jurying of papers will be done by a panel that
includes TCRM’s past Chair.
