Summer 2013 Research and Theory update
by Thomas Holman, Brigham Young University, chair
May 24, 2013
I am excited to report to members of the Research and Theory section
that we will have a large number of extremely good sessions at the
NCFR annual conference this fall. We will cosponsor (with TCRM) a
Special Session with Dr. Richard Lerner, the Bergstrom Chair and
Director of Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts
University. We are also cosponsoring (with the Student/New
Professional section) a threehour NIH Grant Writing 101 Workshop
conducted by Dr. Steven M. Kogan from the University of Georgia.
Our Invited Symposium this year will be a report of the
Recommendations of the Quality Research Commission. Members of
the panel will be Abbie E. Goldberg, Ralph LaRossa, Kevin Roy,
Elizabeth Sharp, and Anisa Zvonkovic and they will share
recommendations based on their yearlong work. I expect a lively,
informative discussion that will contribute to the future of qualitative
research and publishing in family studies.
I accepted nine symposiums—a record I believe—for inclusion in our
program. They will include panel discussions of extensions of the family
stress model, two on family relationships and youth in military families, MexicanAmerican family
relationships in established and emerging immigrant communities, parenting of toddlers, marital attitudes
and beliefs across the life course, fathering in complex families, and finances, family relations, and
child/adolescent wellbeing. Each of these is led by established and emerging scholars and I expect great
insights for researchers and practitioners alike.
We will have six paper sessions on parenting under diverse conditions, parents’ and friends’ impact of
adolescent outcomes, family processes in families with adolescents, children and adolescents in
stepfamilies, predicting marital satisfaction, and qualitative insights into divorce’s impact on children. We
will have a new feature in our poster sessions.
We will have three what we call “poster symposiums” on the topics of coparenting, factors influencing
couple relationships, and military families. Anywhere from five to seven posters on each of those topics will
be placed together and the poster authors will have read and studied the presentations of the other poster
presenters, thus allowing them to integrate their posters’ findings with the other posters in their group. This
should lead to a lively discussion among poster presenters and with visitors to the posters. Besides these
poster symposiums, we will have another 40 to 50 posters on topics like media and technology and the
family, biogenetics and the family, dating and mate selection, emerging adults, violence and abuse, multi
racial families, and much, much more.
Please plan to join me and my wife in beautiful San Antonio, Texas (where we lived right after we married
41 years ago!) for what will be an exciting and energizing conference.

Research and Theory Section News
By Tom Holman, Section Chair
February 01, 2012
Not only will NCFR in Phoenix this year provide opportunities for great Mexican and
Southwest dining, but also an opportunity to learn, connect, and network. And for those
of us from northern climes, the warm desert sun will also be much appreciated!
Unlike other sections that emphasize one component of family, the Research and
Theory section seeks to encourage the papers and presentations across the full
spectrum of issues related to family with special emphasis on the highest quality
research and theory. Also, the RT section sponsors workshops on cuttingedge
statistical and methodological innovations and on theory development and application.
This year the R & T section will sponsor at least two special sessions and will likely co
sponsor one or two others. While we are still in the formative stages as this article was
written, we anticipate one special session on applying a wellknown social theorist's
ideas to family life. Still much in its formative stages is a special session on theorizing
the medical model or on where research on family life and physical health needs to go
next.
We have a new focus groupMilitary Familiesjoining our existing Men and Family and Qualitative Family
Research Network focus groups. These focus groups allow members to network with other members within
these specific realms and we encourage members to be involved.
NCFR is more than its annual conference. and the Research and Theory section officers hope to assist
NCFR to broaden and to extend its reach. One place we hope to have influence is the United Nations
International Year of the Family20th Anniversary. While the UN can be highly politicized, we know NCFR
members of the Research and Theory section can bring good theory and research to bear on the attendant
conferences and resolutions.
On behalf of the other section officersJoyce Arditti, Sara Johnson, Brian Ogolsky, and Shelley MacDermid
Wadsworthwe look forward to putting together a great program, looking for new ways to have influence
and seeing and meeting you in Phoenix this year.

Research and Theory Section News
Thomas Holman, Chair
January 03, 2012
Greetings from the Research and Theory Section! I hope you all had a very stimulating
time at the 2011 NCFR Annual Conference in Orlando. Thanks to the efforts of the
NCFR staff as well as all of the conference presenters and supporters, I think the
conference was a great success. In this article, I describe several efforts that are
underway for 2012.
First, I am working to recruit outstanding scholars to submit proposals to, and attend,
the 2012 conference. This has been an ongoing effort for several years, and I'm
pleased to report that our conference sessions are getting high marks from observers
and attendees.
Second, we are continuing to work on raising funds to support our section awards.
Please send contributions to NCFR, designated either for Research and Theory
section awards, or for the specific award you choose (the Burgess or the Hill awards).
Our goal is to avoid having to reduce the frequency with which we give our awards or reducing the funds
available to help award winners travel to the conference. You can help a great deal with even modest
contributions. Thank you!
Third, I am just beginning my twoyear term as chair and am thus especially eager to hear from you about
how I can organize the best possible conference program for our section and help the section to pursue
other worthy goals. I am eager to hear from you! Please email me at Thomas_holman@byu.edu. Best
wishes for a productive spring term.

Winter 2014 Research & Theory Section update
by Joyce A. Arditti, section chair
December 17, 2014
Excellence in research and theory is increasingly a collaborative and
interdisciplinary endeavor. As we learned in our “dual section” meeting in
Baltimore with our FP colleagues, crossfertilization promotes new ideas
and problem solving. Similarly, society’s most critical problems require
diverse disciplines and perspectives to foster dialogue and understanding.

Research and Theory Section Meeting Minutes
October 31, 2012 – 12:00 – 1:15 PM
Phoenix, AZ
12:00 PM
Attendance: approximately 35
Welcome and Introduction of Section Officers: Tom Holman (Chair); Joyce Arditti (Chair
Elect; absent); Shelly MacDermid-Wadsworth (Past Chair); Sara Johnson
(Secretary/Treasurer); Brian Ogolsky (Student/New Professional Representative); Joan
Jurich (Outgoing Hill Award Chair); Mark Benson (incoming Hill Award Chair).
New attendees were welcomed and encouraged to share affiliations and areas of interest.
Approval of 2011 RT Section Minutes: Minutes of 2011 meeting were distributed. Kay Pasley
moved to approve; Bonnie Barber seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report covering the period from January 1 to October 15
was presented. 2012 conference spending was included. NCFR has estimated the interest
that will be earned by each account through December 31, 2012, so that is also included
(but cannot be confirmed at this time). The 2012 operating budget was $1,500. So far,
expenses total $1,377, for the non-designated award and trophy, and sponsorship of two
conference special sessions (Meta-Analysis by Michael Bernstein and Parenting Styles
and Children’s Obesity Risk by Tom Power). The remaining $123 will be deposited into
our reserves account. Currently there is a balance of $6,848 in the reserves account.
NCFR estimates that this account will earn $33 in interest this year. Together with the
$123 in surplus funds from the operating budget, the total amount for reserves at the end
of this year (estimated) is $7,004. Beginning balance for the Reuben Hill award was
$47,866. NCFR gave $1,750 to support the award, and expenses for cash prize, travel
expenses, and plaque were $1,396. NCFR estimates this account will earn $141 in
interest this year (to December 31). This will leave an ending balance of $48,361. For the
Burgess award, beginning balance for 2012 was $16,167. NCFR gave $1,750 to support
the award, and expenses (for cash prize and plaques) totaled $1,033. NCFR estimates that
this account will earn $48 in interest this year (estimated to December 31), which will
leave a balance of $16,932. The current financial report lists the balance in the royalty
account as $10.045 with no earnings. Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth questioned the
accuracy of this report as there were difficulties last year in identifying the amount of
royalty income. Sara Johnson, Section Secretary/Treasurer, has contacted NCFR to
further investigate this issue. Minutes will be updated once new information is available.
Award Presentations and Reports: The Burgess Award will be presented to Rand Conger at a
plenary session on Thursday. It will next be awarded in 2014. Joan Jurich (outgoing Hill
Award Committee Chair) presented the Hill Award to Schofield, T. J., Martin, M. J.,
Conger, K. J., Neppl, T. M., Donnellan, M. B., & Conger, R. D. (2011). Intergenerational
transmission of adaptive functioning: A test of the interactionist model of SES and
human development. Child Development, 82(1), 33-47. Mark Benson (incoming
Committee Chair) discussed potential revisions/changes to the award criteria and process.
2
He distributed a handout and encouraged members to reflect on it and email committee
members with feedback. Website revisions included 1) deleting “book or monograph”
from the purpose statement as these publication formats are not typically screened; 2)
specifying that the committee consists of volunteers who are members of the Research
and Theory Section; and 3) adding that the process includes two steps (first, committee
nominates articles, and second, the committee rates each nomination). Joan discussed
several other important issues: 1) representation on the awards committee of individuals
with a variety of methodological expertise, including both quantitative and qualitative, as
systematic differences in ratings have been observed based on this; 2) clarification
regarding the meaning of “theory” in the awards criteria. Megan Haseldchwerdt
mentioned the scope of journals that are considered in the nomination process. For
example, there is an effort in the Families and Health section to increase exposure in
public health journals. Todd Goodsell mentioned that for the Straus award, there is a core
group of journals that are reviewed, but individuals may nominate articles for
consideration from other journals. Brian Ogolsky presented the Student/New
Professional Best Abstract Award to Antoinette Lander for her paper session,
Predictors of Health Outcomes and Health Risk Behavior of African American Emerging
Adults.
Focus Group Reports and Awards: The Men in Families focus group awards will be
presented at the focus group meeting Wednesday evening. The Qualitative Family
Research Network will hold its business meeting at 7. Elise Radina announced the
presentation of the Strauss award to Davis, J., Ward, D. B., & Storm, C. (2011). The
unsilencing of military wives: Wartime deployment experiences and citizen
responsibility. Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. The authors were not present to
accept at the section business meeting but will accept the award at the QFRN business
meeting. The Military Families focus group will hold its business meeting Thursday
evening at 8:15. Tom Holman expressed appreciation to award chairs and committee
members and to focus group chairs for their important role and emphasized that these
awards are meaningful to who we are as a field/section.
Approval of Slate of Nominees: Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth presented the slate of

Discussion of Awards Process and Funding: Tom Holman stated that NCFR has
approximately $400,000 in endowment, and this year the fund made only $1,300. This is
not enough to cover the cost of the section awards. Currently, the funds are in CDs (very
safe but with a low interest rate). NCFR has recommended against moving the funds to a
higher risk investment, and section leadership agrees. This year only, NCFR contributed
money to each Section to fund awards so that sections could decide how to fund awards
going forward.
Tom Holman attended the Section Chairs meeting where funding awards was a primary
point of discussion. Other sections have fundraised through things like silent auctions.
We could use reserves to fund the awards, but the reserves would quickly be depleted.
Discussion at the meeting also centered on changing the culture of the awards to be less
about the money and more about the importance of professional recognition. Libby
Balter-Blume mentioned that going forward, NCFR will no longer be waiving
registration fees for award winners and Sections will be expected to pay for these
expenses as well. Paul Amato mentioned that although the registration fee seems like a
small expense, NCFR already loses money on the conference. Kay Pasley suggested
targeted fundraising to solicit contributions to more heavily endow the awards. This
would involve contacting long-term members who are committed to the sections and the
awards. Another suggestion was to put a line on the dues form that would allow members
to contribute a small amount ($5-$15) to the awards. Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth
mentioned a discussion that took place at the section meeting in 2010. It was discussed
that the travel money for the awards is the most important (rather than the honorarium).
In addition, last year a section member volunteered to make a contribution to ensure that
the awards would remain whole over the next few years. Bonnie Barber stated that travel
money and conference registration fees are critical for bringing in high caliber scholars
who would not normally attend NCFR. Jay Mancini suggested that Universities could
sponsor awards the same way they sponsor plenaries, and Elise Radina suggested
approaching publishing companies about sponsorship as well. Tom is attended the
meeting of the Awards Task Force later on Wednesday. Please contact him with
feedback, questions, or concerns.
Conference Update: Tom Holman updated the section about totals for the 2012 R&T section of
the conference. There were 133 submissions to the section. R&T had 13 sessions, with
three symposia and approximately 40 posters. We also co-sponsored two sessions,
spending a total of $1,000. Tom Holman expressed appreciation to the 125 members who
reviewed proposals for the conference.
Plans for 2013 Conference: The 2013 Conference will be held in San Antonio and have a theme
of Well Being of Children and Youth in Families and Communities. Suggestions were
solicited for “special sessions,” which include invited sessions from folks who do not
usually attend NCFR, and invited symposia, which include members as presenters.
Neither of these go through the regular review process but instead are reviewed by
Section officers. Members were encouraged to contact Tom Holman with ideas and
suggestions.

Next year’s conference is also the 75th anniversary celebration. NCFR has plans of its
own but has asked Sections to contribute ideas as well. Suggestions and ideas were
solicited from members. Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth recalled a presentation that took
place at the Feminism and Family Studies business meeting a few years ago about
members who had the longest tenure of attending the conference together and being
roommates. Joe Pittman suggested having “baby pictures” of section members (e.g.,
those who have been influential over the history of the section), and Kari Adamsons
suggested pairing that with trivia questions containing little known facts about them. Kari
also mentioned displays of academic family trees/geneology, and Kay Pasley suggested
that this could be done for historic section figures (e.g., those for whom awards are
named) to document their widespread influence. Kay Pasley also suggested a paper
session based on the decade reviews published in JMF to document the history of the
field. Several section members suggested “fun” activities such as group singing at
plenaries, flash mobs, and Rueben Hill impersonators
Qualitative Research Commission: Anisa Zvonkovic announced the Qualitative Research
Commission, inspired by the recent exchanges in JMF regarding qualitative research and
the special issue of JFTR. Members include Anisa, Kevin Roy, Abbie Goldberg,
Elizabeth Sharp, and Ralph LaRossa. They are in the process of developing guidelines for
authors and reviewers regarding stated and unstated standards for qualitative research.
This may include a tutorial or other materials. They are looking to other journals, the
National Science Foundation, and Ralph is talking with the Board, but they are also
asking for input regarding what would be most helpful. Please communicate your ideas
and experiences to Anisa or any other members of the commission. Anisa also
encouraged members to make nominations for the Felix Bernardo mentoring award.
Meeting Adjourned at 1:15.
