Minnesota Council on Family Relations
Summer/Fall update
September 16, 2011
By Leanne Sponsel, Ph.D., MCFR President
Hello from Minnesota! This year MCFR is all about conferences and trainings. In May, Dr. David Walsh
joined us at the Como Zoo and Conservatory Conference Center in St. Paul for a presentation and
discussion on brain development as an issue in parent educators' work and possible parenting topic. His
new book, Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids, had not even been released, but it will surely be a valuable
resource.
Throughout the year we have been able to offer several workshops on Ethical Thinking and Practice for
Family Professionals. Using the booklet of the same title, we have drawn educators into the examination of
ethical principles and resolving ethical dilemmas.
Our fall conference, December 2, 2011, will feature Dr. Wally Goddard. After hearing him speak at the
NCFR conference last fall, there were several board members who were so impressed that we decided to
invite Dr. Goddard to present so that we could hear more. His topic at the national conference was "Getting
Beyond Skills in Family Life Education" and though our conference title hasn't been decided, we are excited
to learn more about this perspective on our field. Yes, it'll be winter in Minnesota, but we have heated
skyways and it truly is beautiful. Join us.

New Affiliate Councils Board members
2011 election results are in
April 01, 2011
In the 2011 NCFR elections, Rose Allen (Minnesota) was elected as
presidentelect of the Affiliate Councils Board (ACB), and Deb Cashen
(Texas) elected the ACB Program Chair representing the ACB on the
Conference Program Committee. They assume their duties at the end
of this year's annual conference. Rose will fill the presidentelect
position now held by Minnell Tralle, who will begin her twoyear term as
ACB president. Minnell will succeed Chloe Merrill, current ACB
president. Deb takes the position now held by Joanne Roberts, who
will become chair of the Religion & Families Section at the end of the
year.
In addition, Josh Shaw of Weber State University, just elected as the
Student Affiliate Representative to the ACB, will assume his office
immediately because of a vacancy. He is replacing Angela Rushton, formerly of the Stephen F. Austin
State University affiliate, who resigned due to work conflicts.
Rose is an Extension Educator in Family Relations at the University of Minnesota and past president of
MCFR. Deb Cashen is president of the Texas Council on Family Relations. In addition, as presidentelect,
Rose also serves on the NCFR Board of Directors for two years before taking on the twoyear presidency
position of the ACB. Chloe was the first ACB president to hold the presidentelect position (created five
years ago) and a seat on the NCFR Board before assuming the ACB presidency. The change was a good
one, she says, since it allows the presidentelect to focus on affiliate issues at the board level without also
running the very active affiliates board.
Chloe says that Rose, Deb, and Josh are great additions to the ACB. "As longtime members who have
served as affiliate officers, they bring experience and knowledge of the benefits that affiliates provide to
members and how the activities in the affiliates can make NCFR stronger."

News from the Wisconsin Council on Family
Relations
January 13, 2012
Wisconsin was a big winner at the NCFR conference in Florida this past
November. WICFR won "Best State Affiliate Poster," with a $50 prize,
and the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point UCFR group won "Best
University Affiliate Poster" with a $100 prize. What a great way to start
our first year!
We are busying ourselves preparing for our April 13th State
Conference. Our theme this year is Sustainability: Thriving in
Challenging Times... We invite proposals for a variety of topics (related to the work of NCFR, i.e. family,
children, finances, health, policy...) in a variety of formats, from academicians, extension educators,
community practitioners, graduate and undergraduate students in related fields. Students and/or persons
from related disciplines, and other states, are also invited to submit their work. If we are to Thrive, it will be
together!!! Please contact jamikaiserCFLE@gmail.com for details.
We have accomplished the major task of creating the infrastructure of our Affiliate. We have a website, a
public and membersonly Facebook page and an online payment process through Constant Contact that
allows us to build our contact list as well as provide secure online payments. We are glad to be officially up
and running.
We have established a membership promotion for our first full year. Anyone that joins during the Inaugural
Year (through April) will be granted dues at student rates for LIFE!! We hope this promotion will boost
membership and help us build momentum.
In trying to build value and community into our State Affiliate, we have chosen to use a membersonly
Facebook page as our main platform of communication with members. This 24/7, live environment allows
us to connect on many different levels. We still maintain a public page, where we post information about
WICFR/NCFR, and encourage membership. We are working hard to gain members in all parts of the State
and in the different topics of family life in order to have a robust conversation. Most of the postings to date
are regarding job opportunities, which is a fantastic benefit.
Hope to have news from a great conference for our next WICFR update!

Summer 2013 Utah affiliate update
May 24, 2013
On April 5, the UTCFR held its annual conference on the Utah Valley
University Campus. The theme of the conference was “Family Studies
in the Community.” Dr Alan Hawkins was the keynote speaker and
addressed 20plus years of courtmandated mediation for divorcing
couples who still had dependent children. He also identified future
trends and research possibilities in divorce.
Another talk was given by Jacci Graham and AnnaLee Hernandez, the
social workers who built the Utah Grandfamilies Kinship Care Center
which the state has adopted and is implementing in every county in the
state.
The remainder of the program was studentfocused with a poster symposium and then a graduate school
fair. There were 27 posters presented by doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students from Utah and
Idaho universities. Three local charter high school students worked diligently and successfully presented a
poster alongside the others. In all there were 77 student poster presenters. The focus on solving
community problems as Family Studies majors was a success. Ron J. Hammond, Ph.D. Conference Chair
said, “We received many emails and comments of gratitude from faculty and students who found the
conference to be both enlightening and personally moving.” There were 136 faculty and students in
attendance.
