Called to Order @ 10:53am
President’s Report
It has been a good year. We started in January with planning retreat to establish goals and
activities for 2013. The ACB’s goals are to support/maintain existing affiliates and create
opportunities for new affiliates, while increasing communication, visibility, and impact of
affiliates. There are currently 25 student affiliates and 10 state/regional affiliates
(including 26 states).
2013 ACB accomplishments include monthly ACB conference calls, conference call with
student/regional and student affiliate presidents and advisors, and annual leadership
workshop. Minnell thanked Margaret Machara for her efforts putting together the
leadership workshop. She also acknowledged the student breakfast and workshop under
the leadership of Sterling Wall. Minnell announced two new student affiliates (Syracuse,
Montclaire). She noted this was the first year of the student affiliate music video
competition chaired by Amanda Williams, which will be awarded at the student breakfast.
Also undergraduate and graduate paper awards will be awarded at the student breakfast.
The first Presidents’ Coffee Hour was held this morning with state/regional affiliate
presidents prior to the leadership workshop.
A notable challenge is gaining student members and keeping them after they graduate.
Minnell encouraged students to look for a state/regional affiliate to join or to start one if
one doesn’t currently exist. Another key issue is the role of NCFR in policy (NCFR Board is
tackling this also). Tammy Henderson’s presentation at the affiliate leadership workshop is
a great start to that discussion.
As Minnell transitions out of president role, she is thankful for the people she has met and
all that she has learned. Incoming president Rose and the entire ACB is enthusiastic and
hardworking.
2012 Minutes Approved (Merrill/Wall)
New Business

2014 ACB Work Plan: What are the Affiliate Councils’ goals for next year? Minnell asked
affiliates in the audience to forward goals, ideas, etc. to Allison Wickler at NCFR or any ACB
board member.
Call for Submissions 2014 is in the conference registration packet. The 2014 theme is
families at the nexus of global change. The ACB has slots in the proposal process. Any
proposals that come in under ACB category will be reviewed by the board for acceptance as
part of the leadership workshop or as a separate presentation. Affiliates who want to
schedule a meeting (e.g. regional affiliate meeting) at the conference can contact NCFR to
get it in the conference program. Contact Margaret Machara with questions.
The ACB is always looking for good people to serve. The terms are for two years (except
President‐elect, which is four years). Nominations are due in January for 2015‐2017
President‐Elect position. If you know of someone who would make a good representative
for the ACB, please submit their name via the nomination form in your conference
registration packet. The other position openings require an internal vote from the affiliates
(Secretary and SNP representative). Voting will be held in March/April.
Recognition of Outgoing Officers
Thanks for work done over past two years.
Sterling Wall (Student Affiliate Advisor Representative) does a wonderful job of advocating
for student affiliates and provides a lot of energy for the board.
Minnell Tralle (President) has moved the ACB along and it is growing. She is a big part of
the energy in the room and why we are all here.
Introduction of 2013‐2014 Affiliate Councils Board

professional work.”
Janice Henderson’s (PhD student at Texas Tech) level of involvement is more like a
seasoned professional. She said, “I’m honored to have found a place that shares my passion
and to see others who are passionate about what they want to do.”
Other Business
This is one of the largest groups we have had at the leadership workshop; the student
breakfast is also at capacity.
This is your workshop; please fill out the evaluation form. This year’s workshop was
shorter than in previous years, but the conversations seemed just as meaningful.

"Affiliates Matter"
The year in review, conference workshops, award winners
December 13, 2011
By Chloe Merrill, Ph.D., CFLE, ACB Chair 20102011
Following the annual NCFR Conference, there will be a leadership
change on the ACB. This is a result of a twoyear rotation of officers. I
will become the PastPresident. I have certainly enjoyed the two years I
spent on the NCFR Board of Directors and also the past two years as
President of the Affiliate Councils Board. It has been exciting to see
strategic plan developments and affiliate growth during that time.
Thanks to everyone for their support during these past four years.
There has been growth and continued effectiveness from all of the
affiliates.
At the end of the 2011 NCFR Conference, Minnell Tralle will assume
the role of President of the Affiliate Councils Board. The ACB will
continue to change as new leadership takes office. This will lead to
continual new and exciting changes for the ACB and for the affiliates.
The Affiliate Council Board has had a busy year continuing to
implement strategic plans and new ideas for the regional, state, and
student affiliates. Some of the activities that the Affiliate Council Board
and Affiliate Councils have been involved with are highlighted below.
Quarterly conference calls were held (February, May, August) to help meet the needs of the various
affiliate councils and to get a better idea of what affiliate needs are so that NCFR can address them as
best they can.
The Affiliate Councils Board (ACB) met once a month via conference call.
The ACB also met several times at the NCFR Annual Conference in November 2011.
On January 8 and 9, 2011, the ACB met in Minneapolis for the third strategic planning meeting. At this
meeting the board, along with NCFR staff members, mapped out plans for the Affiliate Councils and the
Affiliate Councils Board
At the NCFR Annual Conference, the ACB sponsored its annual workshop entitled "Affiliates Matter:
Planning for Success." The workshop keynote speakers were Deb Cashen and Susan Marsh. Also,
participants learned from other affiliates in the following roundtable discussions: Planning for Success,
Recruitment, Web Page Ideas, Career Paths in Family Science, and Program and Conference Ideas.
Workshop participants had opportunities to interact with their peers. The annual business meeting was also
held at this time.
The ACB sponsored a Friday breakfast meeting for presidents and representatives of student affiliate
councils at the NCFR Annual Conference. The topic was "Bridges to Building a Successful Student/Local
Affiliate."
The Affiliate Councils Board was also pleased to announce two winners of the 2011 ACB Outstanding
Student Paper competition. Each NCFR Affiliate Council can submit one graduate and one undergraduate
student paper to the review committee for award consideration.
This year's graduate student winner is Kimberly A. Crossman of the Illinois Student Council on Family
Relations with her paper titled, "He Could Scare Me Without Laying A Hand On Me." Kimberly received a
monetary award, travel stipend, an award plaque, and presented a poster session.
Michelle Burton and Andrew Chris of the Weber State Student Council on Family Relations and the Utah
Council on Family Relations were the undergraduate student winners with their paper titled, "Religiosity
Impacting Stepfamily Dynamics." They received a monetary award and an award plaque.
This year the ACB also sponsored the second PresidentForADay Award. Michelle Burton from Weber
State University received this award for 2011. The award recognizes a student or new professional's
commitment, energy, innovation in their service to NCFR and empowers them to continue evolving their
leadership role. The recipient of this award will have supported and furthered the organization's mission
during their membership through previous conference volunteering, yearround service opportunities
(including service to student/state/regional affiliate councils or NCFRrelated university or professional
activities), and overall efforts to foster community among S/NPs.
The ACB also gave four Affiliate Councils Award for Meritorious Service. This award recognizes the service
of affiliate members within their local, state and regional council. This past year the recipients were:
Marcie Rein, CFLE Minnesota Council on Family Relations
Dr. Richard Sale Texas Council on Family Relations
Dr. Paul Schvaneveldt Weber State Student Council on Family Relations and Utah Council on Family
Relations
Dr. Jennifer Hardesty Illinois Student Council on Family Relations.
The Affiliate Council Board would like to extend appreciation for the service that the past board members
have given. As they leave the ACB for new adventures, we wish them well and want them to know that they
will be called upon for their expertise in the future. These members include Dr. Richard Sale and Dr. Joanne
Roberts.
New members of the ACB will be welcomed in November including Rose Allen, Presidentelect; Deb
Cashen, program chair; and Josh Shaw, student affiliate representative (Josh actually joined us earlier this
year when there was a resignation). Continuing members include Minnell Tralle, Lloyd Pickering, Dani
Taylor, Chloe D. Merrill, and Lynda Bessey (NCFR staff). Please let us know how we can continue to serve
you and your affiliate needs. We all look forward to working with you and continuing to move the Affiliate
Councils to new heights.

"Affiliates Matter"...News from the Affiliate Councils
Board
New affiliates, conference workshops, award winners
September 16, 2011
By Chloe Merrill, Ph.D., CFLE, ACB Chair
The Affiliate Councils of the National Council on Family Relations are
state, regional, and student groups who work in their immediate areas
as well as with the national organization to further the mission of NCFR.
Affiliates, at all levels, are an important part of NCFR. This year has
been exciting for the Affiliate Councils Board as we have approved four
new affiliates and would like to welcome them. NCFR new affiliates are:
Eastern Illinois University (student affiliate); President, Theresa Lindsay
University of Tennessee at Knoxville (student affiliate); President, Karen
Bluth
Utah Valley University (student affiliate); President, Jeron Parry
Wisconsin Council on Family Relations (state affiliate); President, Jami
Kaiser
Throughout the year we have continued strategic planning and
involvement in a variety of activities to help strengthen all affiliates. We
have continued to hold conference calls quarterly with all the state, regional, and student affiliates
presidents, advisors, or their designee. We have found that this is a good way to interact and be more
aware of affiliate needs.
At the NCFR Annual Conference, this year's Affiliate Councils Workshop on Wednesday, November 16, is
entitled "Affiliates Matter: Planning for Success." The workshop will be held from 8am to 1pm with a
business meeting included. Come hear from Deb Cashen and Susan Marsh and learn from other affiliates
in the following roundtable discussions: Planning for Success, Recruitment, Webpage Ideas, Career Paths
in Family Science, and Program and Conference Ideas. Workshop participants will have opportunities to
interact with their peers during this time.
At the Affiliate Councils business meeting we will be honoring four NCFR members with the Affiliate
Councils Meritorious Service Award. The recipients are Marcie Brooks, Dr. Richard Sales, Dr. Paul
Schvaneveldt and Dr. Jennifer Hardesty. We would love to see you there.
This workshop includes lunch. Registration is required. No charge for affiliate presidents and officers; $30
for others.
The Affiliate Councils will also be sponsoring the Affiliate Councils Student Breakfast on Friday, November
18, 7:3010am, entitled "Bridges to Building a Successful Student/Local Affiliate." This breakfast is a great
opportunity for student officers and advisors to meet their counterparts from other areas, network, and learn
how to develop a strong student affiliate. A presentation will be given by advisors Glee Bertram, Nate Cottle
and Kaye Sears.
Also at this meeting, awards for the Outstanding Graduate and Undergraduate Student Research Papers
will be awarded and the Student PresidentForADay will be recognized. These winners are:
Outstanding Graduate Research Paper: "He Could Scare Me Without Laying A Hand On Me" by
Kimberly A. Crossman, M.S.; Jennifer L. Hardesty, Ph.D.; and Marcela Raffaelli, Ph.D. Sponsoring Affiliate
Council: Illinois Student Council on Family Relations.
Outstanding Undergraduate Research Paper: "Religiosity Impacting Stepfamily Dynamics" by Michelle
Burton, Andrew Chris, and Paul Schvaneveldt, Ph.D. Sponsoring Affiliate Councils: Utah Affiliate Council on
Family Relations; Weber State Student Council on Family Relations.
PresidentforaDay Award: Michelle Burton, senior student at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah.
The Affiliate Councils will also be hosting affiliate displays this year. Each affiliate has the opportunity to set
up a display within the exhibit hall Thursday through Friday. Affiliates need to contact Lynda Bessey at
NCFR headquarters by September 15 if they are interested in showing off their affiliate and setting up a
display.
More information and flyers will be forthcoming concerning all of these activities.
Please let us know how we can continue to serve you and your affiliate and help you meet your goals.

It's "Family Life Education Month" in Nacogdoches

Mayor makes the declaration at SFA campus
February 23, 2012
Wednesday at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas,
Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn proclaimed February the Month
of Family Life Education. The Jacks Council on Family Relations
hosted the event.
The proclamation stated "The family must cope with challenges in
society." Some of the challenges include education, poverty, health and the effects of divorce and
remarriage on family relationships.
In a story in the student newspaper, writer Katelynn Marcum described how family life educators work to
prevent stress put on a family through lack of health, education or childcare. They also help families deal
with events such as divorce.
Family life education touches people at all stages of life, Dr. Tara Newman, assistant professor of human
sciences, said. "Educators serve from the womb to the tomb."

Minnesota Council on Family Relations
Summer/Fall update
September 16, 2011
By Leanne Sponsel, Ph.D., MCFR President
Hello from Minnesota! This year MCFR is all about conferences and trainings. In May, Dr. David Walsh
joined us at the Como Zoo and Conservatory Conference Center in St. Paul for a presentation and
discussion on brain development as an issue in parent educators' work and possible parenting topic. His
new book, Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids, had not even been released, but it will surely be a valuable
resource.
Throughout the year we have been able to offer several workshops on Ethical Thinking and Practice for
Family Professionals. Using the booklet of the same title, we have drawn educators into the examination of
ethical principles and resolving ethical dilemmas.
Our fall conference, December 2, 2011, will feature Dr. Wally Goddard. After hearing him speak at the
NCFR conference last fall, there were several board members who were so impressed that we decided to
invite Dr. Goddard to present so that we could hear more. His topic at the national conference was "Getting
Beyond Skills in Family Life Education" and though our conference title hasn't been decided, we are excited
to learn more about this perspective on our field. Yes, it'll be winter in Minnesota, but we have heated
skyways and it truly is beautiful. Join us.

New Affiliate Councils Board members
2011 election results are in
April 01, 2011
In the 2011 NCFR elections, Rose Allen (Minnesota) was elected as
presidentelect of the Affiliate Councils Board (ACB), and Deb Cashen
(Texas) elected the ACB Program Chair representing the ACB on the
Conference Program Committee. They assume their duties at the end
of this year's annual conference. Rose will fill the presidentelect
position now held by Minnell Tralle, who will begin her twoyear term as
ACB president. Minnell will succeed Chloe Merrill, current ACB
president. Deb takes the position now held by Joanne Roberts, who
will become chair of the Religion & Families Section at the end of the
year.
In addition, Josh Shaw of Weber State University, just elected as the
Student Affiliate Representative to the ACB, will assume his office
immediately because of a vacancy. He is replacing Angela Rushton, formerly of the Stephen F. Austin
State University affiliate, who resigned due to work conflicts.
Rose is an Extension Educator in Family Relations at the University of Minnesota and past president of
MCFR. Deb Cashen is president of the Texas Council on Family Relations. In addition, as presidentelect,
Rose also serves on the NCFR Board of Directors for two years before taking on the twoyear presidency
position of the ACB. Chloe was the first ACB president to hold the presidentelect position (created five
years ago) and a seat on the NCFR Board before assuming the ACB presidency. The change was a good
one, she says, since it allows the presidentelect to focus on affiliate issues at the board level without also
running the very active affiliates board.
Chloe says that Rose, Deb, and Josh are great additions to the ACB. "As longtime members who have
served as affiliate officers, they bring experience and knowledge of the benefits that affiliates provide to
members and how the activities in the affiliates can make NCFR stronger."

and the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point UCFR group won "Best
University Affiliate Poster" with a $100 prize. What a great way to start
our first year!
We are busying ourselves preparing for our April 13th State
Conference. Our theme this year is Sustainability: Thriving in
Challenging Times... We invite proposals for a variety of topics (related to the work of NCFR, i.e. family,
children, finances, health, policy...) in a variety of formats, from academicians, extension educators,
community practitioners, graduate and undergraduate students in related fields. Students and/or persons
from related disciplines, and other states, are also invited to submit their work. If we are to Thrive, it will be
together!!! Please contact jamikaiserCFLE@gmail.com for details.
We have accomplished the major task of creating the infrastructure of our Affiliate. We have a website, a
public and membersonly Facebook page and an online payment process through Constant Contact that
allows us to build our contact list as well as provide secure online payments. We are glad to be officially up
and running.
We have established a membership promotion for our first full year. Anyone that joins during the Inaugural
Year (through April) will be granted dues at student rates for LIFE!! We hope this promotion will boost
membership and help us build momentum.
In trying to build value and community into our State Affiliate, we have chosen to use a membersonly
Facebook page as our main platform of communication with members. This 24/7, live environment allows
us to connect on many different levels. We still maintain a public page, where we post information about
WICFR/NCFR, and encourage membership. We are working hard to gain members in all parts of the State
and in the different topics of family life in order to have a robust conversation. Most of the postings to date
are regarding job opportunities, which is a fantastic benefit.
Hope to have news from a great conference for our next WICFR update!
